This refresher training is designed for experienced Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs) to update and reinforce their knowledge, reflect on current practices, and stay informed about emerging safeguarding issues. It aims to strengthen confidence in fulfilling the DSL role and ensure continued compliance with statutory responsibilities.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Reaffirm their understanding of the core responsibilities and statutory duties of the Designated Safeguarding Lead.
- Reflect on the importance of maintaining a strong safeguarding culture within their school or setting.
- Evaluate current and emerging safeguarding challenges and their implications for practice.

This Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) Refresher virtual training will begin at 9 am and finish at 1 pm via Microsoft Teams.

Session Content
This refresher session will include:
- Updates on current legislation, statutory guidance, and legal responsibilities.
- A review of signs and categories of abuse, with a focus on evolving patterns and risks.
- Re-examination of the DSL’s role and how it may be adapting in response to new challenges.
- Exploration of emerging issues such as the impact of artificial intelligence, local crime trends, and peer-on-peer sexual violence and harassment in schools.
- The role and responsibilities of appropriate adults in safeguarding contexts.
- Strategies for sustaining and enhancing a positive safeguarding culture.
- Identifying common barriers to effective safeguarding and collaboratively exploring practical solutions.
Participants will also be provided with updated resources and signposting to further support and professional development opportunities.
A bit about your trainer:
Dr. Holly Goodwin is an experienced DSL and safeguarding trainer with a master’s in advanced child protection and is trained to deliver DSL supervision. She has over twenty years of teaching experience in UK schools including working as Head of Boarding and Deputy Head Pastoral in two independent schools. She has led safeguarding teams covering all key stages from 3 years to 19 years, in junior, senior and sixth form settings.
She is passionate about making safeguarding personal and ensuring delegates who attend our courses, and staff who come into contact with her, go away feeling confident to undertake their safeguarding roles and responsibilities and further protect children and adults in their care.
At the end of the training, you will receive a completion certificate.
